Our September read is The List of Suspicious Things by Jennie Godfrey.
It's Yorkshire in 1979 and 12 year old Miv is growing up against the frightening backdrop of the Yorkshire Ripper Murders. When her Dad starts talking about moving the family down south, Miv is horrified at the thought of leaving her best friend Sharon. So the girls come up with a plan: if they can work out who is responsible for the murders, perhaps Miv won't have to move.
They begin making a list of all the suspicious people and strange goings on in their neighbourhood. But the amateur investigation starts uncovering secrets much closer to home - Within their community, their families and ever their own friendship.
Although the Yorkshire Ripper provides the backdrop, this isn't a conventional crime novel. Its much more about childhood, friendship, families and what its like growing up in a northern community in the late 1970's.
